The Food Waste Collective

We are a group of inspired volunteers that organise and arrange events to help divert good food from our waste stream. We aim to to get conversations going between all of the people in the food supply chain, farmers, shops, distributors, policy-makers and us - the consumers too - to tackle this issue of food waste.

Do we need a Food Waste Collective?
There is often talk on the news of world food shortages and an inability for everyone to find enough to eat. What is perhaps less well-publicised is the massive amount of food which is perfectly fine to eat, but which goes to waste every day.

Food surplus or food shortage?
Last year the a report published by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers found that between 30% and 50% of food produced around the world ends up in landfill before it even reaches the consumer.

In the UK the amount of food waste produced is an estimated 15 million tonnes per year. With food prices themselves continuing to rise and growing reports of families unable to afford enough to eat, there appears to be a clear gap in between hungry people on one side and wasteful food companies on the other. In many ways this gap is completely avoidable; all it would take is some concise organisation and increased communication between all involved. While the gap remains, however, The Food Waste Collective have started taking action themselves.

We run many fun and inspiring events that really make a difference. We have at least 4 events a year that only run because of the kind volunteers that help out. If you are interested volunteering email foodwastecollective@gmail.com and write Volunteer list in the Subject line.

Some of what we do.....

Good Food For Good Causes
We run a quarterly event where retailers donate to us food that would otherwise be wasted and we effectively open a food bank for charities.

Generous donors have been Infinity food, Real Patisserie, TG Fruits and Fanny's of Hanover. In the past the University of Brighton, the Circus Street Old Municipal Market and the Open Market have all let us use their space to run the events.  We have re-distributed over 7 tonnes of food during 2014 and had over 50 volunteers help and given food to more than 50 local charitable organisations. These events are all volunteer run and make a real difference. H
ave a look at an article about this event in the Guardian and The Argus.

The next Good Food for Good Causes event is on Monday 30th March 2015 at the Open Market, London Road. If you are a charity who would benefit from food donations, a business who can offer donations of food or a volunteer who is willing to help out please contact foodwastecollective@gmail.com

The Lantern Fayre free feast Sunday 5th October 2014
A big part of what we feel is important to do as the FWC, alongside food saving events, is to raise awareness about the issue of food waste to influence public opinion, which will sow the seeds to changes in attitudes and behaviours of our local Brightonians, and really make a difference citywide to wasting less food.

At the great harvest Lantern Fayre feast everyone was invited to be served a fresh free 'saved' tasty meal within the atmosphere of discussions about food waste issues.  There was lots of information and partnerships with other organisations to connect happy eaters to new food 'saving' ideas/advice/volunteer opportunities were offered e.g. The Gleaning Network, Plan Zheroes, Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, The Real Junk Food Project to really make a impact on tummies, thoughts and hearts.

The Lantern Fayre is a large community arts event run by Friends of the Level  http://www.thelanternfayre.co.uk/

This was a hugely successful event with 1200 free meals all made from food which may otherwise have gone to waste. All this was made possible by the wonderful food donors and volunteers, so a big thank you to all.
